Relationships and Health Education

Our Relationships and Health curriculum is designed to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate in this ever-changing world. As a result, they will become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We aim to improve pupils’ capacity to learn, their resilience and emotional well-being and mental health and thereby enhance their life-chances.

The curriculum is structured using the ‘Jigsaw PSHE’ scheme, which provides a comprehensive and progressive framework. Teaching is organised in two-year cycles (Cycle A and Cycle B), with the entire school exploring the same theme simultaneously. Lessons are carefully planned to build on prior learning, allowing children to develop their understanding over time. The six core themes—Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships, and Changing Me—are explored simultaneously across the school, creating a cohesive learning experience.

Key skills such as mindfulness, critical thinking, and effective communication are explicitly taught, while other elements, like self-esteem and respect for diversity, are embedded throughout. Weekly timetabled lessons and half-termly assemblies ensure consistency and depth in the delivery of the program.

Sex education is a vital part of the curriculum but is taught separately within some year groups to ensure it aligns with pupils’ age and developmental stages. This approach ensures that the content is both relevant and appropriate, supporting children’s understanding of relationships and change in a sensitive and thoughtful way.
