Geography
Geography at Manor Hill aims to foster a curiosity to explore and to promote a love of geography through discovering the world.
The Geography curriculum is structured around four central concepts: location, place, human and physical geography, and geographical skills and fieldwork. Each unit of work integrates these key concepts, enabling children to progressively build a deeper and broader understanding of geographical knowledge and thinking. The inclusion of fieldwork and skills development ensures that children can apply their learning in real-world contexts, equipping them with the disciplinary knowledge required to think and act as geographers.
Key strands within the Geography curriculum provide an additional layer of depth to the children’s knowledge and understanding. These strands have been carefully selected to focus on essential themes such as settlements, climates, land use, and biomes. Over time, this cumulative knowledge helps children grasp complex geographical ideas, reason critically, and articulate their thoughts confidently.
By exploring these strands, children also make meaningful connections between subjects—for example, linking settlements to historical developments or relating biomes to scientific studies. This interdisciplinary approach enriches their learning experience, enabling them to see how geography influences and is influenced by the wider world. Ultimately, these key strands empower children to engage in informed discussions and confidently apply their geographical knowledge across various contexts.
